The Muppet Movie
General Mills, 1979
4. Kermit the Frog
It’s been something like 20 years since the Muppets were “cool” in the street cred kind of way. Sure, they’ve been kicking around with TV movies, game show cameos and such, but if you ask a kid today who Kermit is, many won’t have a clue.
Thanks to the glory of DVD, my kids don’t know that The Muppet Show is 30-year-old. In my daughter’s mind, she probably suspects Dora the Explorer has the same history. She’s probably in for a shock when she starts school in a couple years. But in the meantime I’ll continue to convince her that Kermit and the gang are as cool as Vanilla Ice was in 1991, Milli Vanilli in 1990 and Jose Canseco in 1989.
So dear, this one’s for you.
This card marks one of the first Muppet card sets, not that there’s been many. The 12-card set commemorates the release of the Muppets big-screen debut in The Muppet Movie. Cards were found on the backs of General Mills cereal boxes in panels of three. Because the cards had to be cut out manually, good luck find them cut to professional standards.
The 12 cards consist of promo shots – some staged, some from the film. All are labeled on the front with a number and the name of the character (or characters) featured on the front. Card backs are blank.
